Swillington Ings

I'm determined never to come here again after a couple of hours this morning. To many birding is a pleasure whereas personally it's an obsession devoid of any joy. Oh for the wastelands of Queensbury and Calderdale where my thoughts can be distracted only fleetingly by avian activity.

There appeared to have been at least 6 booming Bittern both close to or near distant. (Is that an Oxymoorhen I wonder?)

Reed
& Sedge Warbler were abundant while Cettis were down to a couple. 1 Grasshopper Warbler was reeling, I'm pretty sure this constitutes a site first for me. 1 Whitethroat.

3 pr of Black-necked Grebe were seen. In each case one bird presumably female (?) had a fledging its back. A couple of Little Grebe seen & a few GC Grebe.
Several busy Swift & Sand Martin.

1 each Kestrel, Red Kite & Shelduck. 6 Pochard, 3/4 Gadwall, 5/6 Shoveler & half of UK Tufted Duck population. Cormorants, Canadas & Greylags, the latter two with many young.
3 Redshank, pr Oystercatcher & Lapwings incl. young. An epidemic of BHG but not a single Tern spotted. Well, I am allowed some respite surely?
